Photo Share Podcast #25: Using Flickr To Archive Pictures

Thanks for joining us again on the Photo Share Podcast. We especially want to thank everybody that has been contributing photos and answering the question of the week on the Flickr group. This week our photo was contributed by The Great God Pan (Zak). Is that a mime or a “living statue”? We couldn’t figure it out.

Our interview this week is with Dboo (Steve), who is the photo archivist for the collection of photos that Nick DeWolf took before he passed. This isn’t just any collection of photos . . . in terms of volume we’re talking about thousands and thousands of photos (by the way Steve was talking, maybe hundreds of thousands!). And most of these photos are from film cameras, so Steve is scanning negatives and photos all the time. Anyhow, Nick DeWolf was an interesting guy, so most of our conversation is about Nick, his photography, his life and times. Part 2 of the interview will be up in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of a couple of weeks . . . based on our erratic schedule of late you might have guessed that Sandra and I have been pretty busy. We’ve both got things going on right now, so for the foreseeable future we’re going to an ever other week schedule. We don’t want to stop because we enjoy talking to Flickr members so much, but it’s tough to find the balance we need.

Anyhow . . . our question of the week . . . What is your personal favorite style of photography? And Why? You can answer that question and also contribute photos to the group at the PSP Flickr group.

We’re back after a one week break, which we need to take to catch-up on other life things . . .

There to the right you see our photo of the week, Memorial, by Lepista. On the podcast Sandra and I were talking about how a lot of memorials look alike, no matter what country you’re in. This one is in Liverpool, but I’ve seen similar ones in Germany and the U.S. What does that say about memorials?!

Lorenzo DomÃnguez, or LorenzoDom, or I would suggest, just Lorenzo (I think if you’re on Flickr you might just know him by his first name, he’s that popular — 18k plus contacts!), is our latest interview subject (we’ll have part two next week). Lorenzo is popular on Flickr for a bunch of reasons: cool photos, his writing that accompanies his photos, his story about how he starting taking photos and putting them on Flickr, and his self published books. He’s someone that’s learned how to use Flickr to promote and market himself, something I’m always interested in learning about. Plus he’s a really humble guy that is more than willing to help and give good advice.

Also this week, Sandra tells us more about her experience selling one of her photos for a billboard advertisement, which hopefully doesn’t turn into a cautionary tale!

Our question of the week, which you can answer on the PSP group on Flickr, should get some interesting answers: Have you ever been stopped taking photographs? If so for what reason?

There have been a lot of great things happening with the podcast lately; we’ve got a bunch of dedicate administrators looking around for intriguing photos to invite to the group, and the number of members is steadily growing. Sandra and I would like to thank everyone of listening and submitting their photos.

Take a look at that photo there, submitted by Demi-Brooke. It’s another great photo by one of our younger members that really shines. Thanks being for submitting the latest photo of the week!

And we present part two of the interview with Helena Zinkham from the Library of Congress. Speaking of which, there was an article in the Boston Globe last weekend about the LOC Flickr project, and it quotes Helena.

Photo Share Podcast #21: Flowers, Prizes and The LOC

We’re baaaaaack! Hard to believe that we’re 21 episodes into this thing . . . did you know that most podcasts are discontinued after just 4 or 5 episodes?

On to the show . . . our photo of the week comes from Basher’s Batey, and we’d like to thank her very much for contributing her work to the group.

Our interview this week, part one of two, is with Helena Zinkham from the Library of Congress. She is one of the team that’s working on the LOC Flickr project. You might have noticed their profile and the photos they’ve uploaded so far. Right now they’re uploading 50 photos a week from the Bain News Service collection, but they’ve already uploaded over 3600 photos. The idea is to make this photos available for people to tag and contribute comments that further contextualize the photos. Stay tuned for the second part next week.

Our question of the week was inspired by some of our interviews. “People often experience life changes which may or may not effect their photography. With or without details, would you like to share how your photography has been effected by these changes?” You can answer the question at the PSP Flickr Group.

While I have you here, I’d like to point you to a new resource on the Web that interacts with Flickr: PhotoShop Express. It’s a Web based tool that allows you to edit and store your photos, plus upload them back to Flickr. Oh, and it’s free.

Speaking of free, we’re having a contest. The purpose of the contest is to promote the podcast — total self interest, I know — but there is some over all benefit: the more popular we become, the better interviews we can get. In that light, I’m giving away 3 domain names that I own. How can you participate in the contest?

You need to promote the podcast on the Web or any other method you can, asking people to come to the Photo Share Podcast and subscribe to the feed. That means you can talk the podcast up on your blog, in your photo stream, on your Flickr profile . . . or any other idea I haven’t thought of. Using our stats package I can tell exactly where our traffic is coming from, so it’ll be pretty easy for me to determine the winner. If you’re doing something interesting you think might not be reflected in our stats, let me know.

To get them you need to either have a Godaddy account or start one (they’re free too). When we announce the winners on the June 16th podcast the first people to contact me will get first choice of the domain name they want. Here are the domains I’ll be giving away:

Photo Share Podcast #20: Our Erotic Side

I know there’s some clever quote from a Prince song about being erotic that I could use here, but I can’t think of it . . . oh, well. Really our interview with Alejandra Guerrero (Corporate Vampire) isn’t about being erotic, but that’s the type of photography she does for work. The interview is about her being put on “restriction” by Flickr even though she was following the community guidelines. In many ways the guidelines are pretty vague, and her restriction seems to be arbitrary because I see pornography all over Flickr (photos that were not taken by the poster –Â which is against the guidelines), and these people don’t have their accounts (most often free ones) shut down. Why?

On another subject . . . we have our photo of the week, submitted by Yyellowbird and voted on by people that visited the Photo Share Podcast website. I’m serious, to me that photo doesn’t look like she has a bunch of props around her; do you think that photo’s staged? Anyhow, thanks for the submission and to all the people that voted for the photo. Check out the site to vote on a new set of photos.

Finally, our new question of the week (back to the erotic!): What are your feelings and thoughts about erotic photography on flickr? How do you think Flickr should make the distinction between erotic photography and pornography? You can answer the new question at the PSP Flickr group.

This week we had part two of our interview with Chris Seufert, who is a regular contributor to the PSP Flickr group and a professional photographer (really, an all around media creator). One thing that’s interesting is how hard it’s to follow the Flickr community guidelines, that in many ways these are contradicted by some of their own policies found on other pages.

Stay tuned for next week when we have an interview like you’ve never heard on the PSP, when we talk to someone who was put on restriction for not following the guidelines . . . even though she was.

Yup, we’re doing it like pros with this podcast. That’s in reference to our interview with professional media creator Chris Seufert (he works in photography, video, and audio, among other things). This is our first interview with someone who is actually making a living from their photography, and Chris is doing it a little differently than most. He’s actually doing most of his marketing threw Flickr. This is part one of a two part interview.

To the right there is our photo of the week, contributed by Fiction and Photography (name: Alan Nelson). We’d like to thank him for contributing and to everyone who voted.Â I’m not sure of the numbers, but I don’t think there’s a lot of black and white photography posted on Flickr (compared to color), so I think it’s nice when we can highlight some of the good ones.

Speaking of black and white photography, here’s our question of the week: Compared to color photography on flickr, why do you think we see so few black and white photos? Does anyone who ordinarily shoots in color decide later that a photo might look nicer in B&W and change it in photo editing software? You can answer the question of the week at the PSP Group on Flickr.

Sorry we’re a little late, but we’re making fine audio products here! We have a great interview with Barbara, the young photographer that won photo of the week last week. It’s a great interview, especially for us old folks who don’t really know how young people are using Flickr.

This week our photo of the week comes from MilwaukeeJohn, who takes some really cool photos. And please vote for our photos of the week; we really want to get a better turn out in support of the photographers nice enough to submit photos to the PSP group.

Why are we demanding donuts? Because, that was this group is doing, which is sort of poking fun at all of the protest groups that seem to pop up whenever something changes at Flickr, which has recently happened with the introduction of Flickr video.

And the question of the week, which I think is a good one, is ” If you could take a photo of any historical event, what would it be?” You can answer that at the Flickr group.

This week we interviewed Debbie T, one of our new group administrators. I’ll tell you, her energy puts me to shame! She’s a good photographer and really knows how to use the power of Flickr networking. In our interview Debbie mentioned that she’s been trying out Ipernity, a photo sharing site much like Flickr. After our interview Sandra checked it out and thought it wasn’t half bad.

We also mentioned a new Flickr feature, find your friends, that looks at your email address book and sees if they have a Flickr account. And we have created our first screencast tutorial, describing how to install and use the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox; we think Greasemonkey is a great tool for improving the Flickr experience.

Sorry about the delay in the podcast; I was a bit under the weather and couldn’t muster the energy to get the podcast up. You might be interested in their podcast because it’s more of a how-to podcast that discusses and tries to teach you some of the concepts of both film and digital photography. Both Sandra and I’ve found Exposure useful, so maybe you will too.

We have one interview a week planned into the future, and what we have in the can thus far is pretty damn good.

Photo Share Podcast #11: Take Two!

Last week was tough! We had many technical snafus, so it’s a minor miracle that we got this podcast out the door. We’d like to thank quadzillaquadzillaquadzilla for his photo of the week. It has a painterly quality I like, plus it reminds me of the 1987 movie Matewan.

Unfortunately with our technical problems we lost our interview with Guy Swarbrick, administrator of the group Flickrwhack Live. Don’t know what a Flickrwhack is? Well, it’s inspired by Googlewhacks, which are searches in Google using just two words and return one result. Guy has taken that concept and applied it to Flickr; do a search using two words and come up with just one photo result. We thought you might like joining Guy’s group and playing along. In the future we’ll be talking with Guy about Flickrwhacks and photo sharing in general.

Another new feature is our photo of the week voting system. If you go to our Photo Share Podcast website, on the sidebar, you’ll see where you can vote on next week’s photo of the week. Plus, I’ll post these images to the website.

Our new question of the week: If you’ve done any of the “photo of the day groups”, have you done them for multiple of years? Personally I can’t imagine doing that, but maybe some of you are working on your second year!

Photo Share Podcast #10: We’ve got your Schmaps!

Okay, this week we tried not to bore you to death with business talk about Yahoo and Microsoft. Instead we talked about Schmap and how they have used the Creative Commons License, some hustle, and the kindness of others to create a business model. We’ve mentioned Schmap before, but this past week Sandra created a new group, I Got Schmapped! because when she searched for people who were Schmapped, she found over 5,000 photos. That’s a lot of invites, and none of these people make any money from the fine folks at Schmap. I have a problem with it, but I guess there’s many people who don’t!

Our question of the week, which you can answer on the Photo Share Podcast Flickr group or by calling our comment line, is “What is the price limit you spend on a pro flickr account?” Sandra just re-upped her account for $25 and I predicted that Flickr would increase its price this year.

The reason for this question comes from the story of that photo you see to the left, taken by Eddie Adams in February 1968. I’m sure you’ve seen the photograph before, it’s one of the longest enduring to come from the Vietnam War, and it helped to change public opinion against the war. Well, Mr. Adams regreted taking the photo, saying that ” The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera. Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world.”

Today’s podcast includes part two of our conversation with David Muir from Glasgow, Scotland. We talk about censorship of the Internet and Flickr by various countries and schools, which is a complicated issue. Also, I clarify exactly what gets censored on the internet in the United States.

The photo of the week comes from Brees Knees. I like this photo; it’s kind of creepy and spooky.

Sandra and I talked about Schmap, who contacted her about contributing a photo for their travel pamphlet. Our consensus was that it was a rip-off; the company asks to use your photos, doesn’t pay anything for the privilege, then tells you that the privilege and honor is YOURS. Total B.S.

We have a good question of the week, one that should generate a lot of response: What level of censorship do you think is appropriate for primary and secondary schools that use Flickr? Are you aware of any local policies in regards to censorship of the Internet in your local schools?

This week we have our first Skype interview. David Muir joins us from Glasgow, Scotland to discussÂ copyrightÂ issues,Â Creative Commons,Â and his experience with these issues in his job of training teachers in Scotland. David mentioned a good video explaining Creative Commons Licenses and how they work; you can find a few different Creative Commons videos here.

We also want to thank Harry Harris, who submitted the photo of the week. It’s an interesting picture because it’s a composite photo made from 4 different photos.

We’re here, just a day late. We started off talking about an old friend of mine, Todd, who’s doing some interesting photography work with found photos and story telling (he’s a pretty good photographer too). You can find Todd’s Flickr photostream here. Hopefully he’ll be a guest on a future show.

Our photo of the week, which you can see above, is from Greg in Ontario. It’s an interesting low light photo taken at 800 iso; look at the large size and you can see how much he had to push.

Because of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, a lot of new equipment was release last week, and a bunch of it had integration with Flickr, like this DVR and a really nifty wireless network picture frame that takes photos from an RSS photo feed like those found on Flickr.

Also in the news, we talked about the financial troubles of Yahoo! and how that might affect Flickr, if at all. This article in the NY Times paints a pretty bleak picture (no pun intended), and speculates about the possible purchase of Yahoo! by Microsoft.

And that brings us to the new question of the week, ” If Yahoo merged with another company, do you think Flickr would be affected and how?”.

Our question last week, “How do you feel about people critiquing your photos on Flickr?”, generated more or less similar responses: people aren’t really on Flickr to get critiques. It’s a social site where people can meet and learn about photography. But other people don’t mind the critiques. I guess it depends if you actually submit your photos to a group whose purpose is the critiquing of photos.

That’s right, our latest picture of the week is a bug. Well, it’s more than that, so listen to the podcast. We would like to thank Ben Craig for his submission to the Flickr group.

The mash-up we talked about incorporated more than just Flickr, it had Google Maps, Wikipedia, and a lot of other geo related data. It’s called Ongmap.

Also, in the news and a mash-up, we talked about the storms happening in the Western U.S. and how a newspaper is using a Google Map/Flickr mash-up to show people photos of the devastation.

Again this week we discussed the important topic of stealing photos from Flickr, and the post that blogger Robert Scoble wrote about how he doesn’t have much concern about people swiping his photos. Though, professional photograhers like Lane Hartwell do have a problem with people taking her photos for their own gain, especially when they don’t even credit her. We want to thank Amy Lou Astolfi for joining our conversation.

Finally, our new question of the week is: How do you feel about people critiquing your photos on Flickr? Is it okay for people to critique photos without permission from the photographer?

We’re on the verge of a new year and we’re still producing the podcasts. No sleep for us!

We’d like to thank our photo of the week winner vulcanhalfbreed365. Nobody really wins anything, but it’s fun to recognize and talk about the interesting photos that people submit.

Also on the podcast plate, in our continuing series, we talked about Flickr mash-ups and the directory of nearly 300 different Flickr related mash-ups. And the mash-up we featured was Feel Image, a application that aggregates multiple photo sharing sites and makes them searchable by tags. This one has some real potential.

On the news front we highlighted a new Mac OS X application called Flickr Fan, which integrates the RSS feeds from Flickr into the operating system screen saver. Right now it’s in beta, but I like what I see so far. I haven’t used it, but I’m told there’s a similar program called Slickr for the PC people.

In our last bit of news we discussed the story about FOX stealing the content from a Flickr user to use on an NFL broadcast; it’s becoming more and more common for corporations to steal content from average people instead of paying for it.

And lastly, we have a new feature: question of the week. Each week we’ll pose a new question, which we ask you to answer either via the comment line or email, then next week we’ll discuss the responses.

The question this week is, Do people use more than one online photo sharing web site?

First off, our photo of the week is one that I wanted to choose as soon as he contributed it to the group. I’m grateful that Paul V Specht took the time to contribute the photo, plus he called in to our comment line to to give us a brief story about the photo. Thanks, Paul. Those of us who are interested in medium format photography appreciate the tips.

We also talked about a couple of different Flickr mash-ups. There’s the fun time waster Fastr that you can play against other people; images pop up on the screen and you try to guess the common tag among all the photos. The other mash-up we talked about was Tagnautica. This one we didn’t like as much because there seemed to be something missing, despite the neat Flash interface.

In the news we talked about the Flickr Forum in Toronto, the new television show in the UK called Picture This, and two improvements to Flickr: an upgrade to version 3.0 for Uploadr and a new stats feature.

And Sandra told us about three really nice people she’s met through Flickr: Matt, who bought some used shoes he saw in one of Sandra’s photos (funny story), a woman from Thailand who gave her photography tips, and Susan, who has been a good friend around the holidays.

We’re not taking a break for the holidays, so stay tuned. We’ll be back with another podcast on New Year’s eve.

Sorry for being a little late with podcast number 2; we had some technical difficulties, plus we’re going to be changing our publishing date from Friday to Mondays. Hopefully when you wake up Monday morning, the podcast will be waiting for you.

In our second podcast we talk about our photo of the week, contributed by Amy, and how she captured her first attempt at night photography.

Also, we spoke about the Firefox add-on, Flickrfox, that makes browsing through photos on Flickr extremely easy. In future podcasts we’ll be highlighting more of these tools, so if you have a favorite let us know.

Presidential campaign efforts to use social media to reach potential voters and rally their troupes was also a topic. It’s interesting how politicians and others are using Flickr and other social media tools to create a sense of participation in their campaigns.

We also discussed why people might use Flickr even if they don’t really have any photos to share–to increase their Google ranking!

And finally, we talked about a neat Flickr tool created by Drew Myers that allows you to find any photos your contacts have that may have made explorer. Tools like this are made because Flickr makes their application programming interface (API) public. Google and others do the same thing. In future shows we’ll highlight people that create “mash ups“–mixing two or more tools to create a new application.

Finally, we want to thank Chi Weapon for the use of their song Kanji. They’re a band from Scotland that has some great podsafe music. Check them out!
