Thanks for joining us again on the Photo Share Podcast. We especially want to thank everybody that has been contributing photos and answering the question of the week on the Flickr group. This week our photo was contributed by The Great God Pan (Zak). Is that a mime or a “living statue”? We couldn’t figure it out.

Our interview this week is with Dboo (Steve), who is the photo archivist for the collection of photos that Nick DeWolf took before he passed. This isn’t just any collection of photos . . . in terms of volume we’re talking about thousands and thousands of photos (by the way Steve was talking, maybe hundreds of thousands!). And most of these photos are from film cameras, so Steve is scanning negatives and photos all the time. Anyhow, Nick DeWolf was an interesting guy, so most of our conversation is about Nick, his photography, his life and times. Part 2 of the interview will be up in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of a couple of weeks . . . based on our erratic schedule of late you might have guessed that Sandra and I have been pretty busy. We’ve both got things going on right now, so for the foreseeable future we’re going to an ever other week schedule. We don’t want to stop because we enjoy talking to Flickr members so much, but it’s tough to find the balance we need.

Anyhow . . . our question of the week . . . What is your personal favorite style of photography? And Why? You can answer that question and also contribute photos to the group at the PSP Flickr group.

We’re back after a one week break, which we need to take to catch-up on other life things . . .

There to the right you see our photo of the week, Memorial, by Lepista. On the podcast Sandra and I were talking about how a lot of memorials look alike, no matter what country you’re in. This one is in Liverpool, but I’ve seen similar ones in Germany and the U.S. What does that say about memorials?!

Lorenzo DomÃnguez, or LorenzoDom, or I would suggest, just Lorenzo (I think if you’re on Flickr you might just know him by his first name, he’s that popular — 18k plus contacts!), is our latest interview subject (we’ll have part two next week). Lorenzo is popular on Flickr for a bunch of reasons: cool photos, his writing that accompanies his photos, his story about how he starting taking photos and putting them on Flickr, and his self published books. He’s someone that’s learned how to use Flickr to promote and market himself, something I’m always interested in learning about. Plus he’s a really humble guy that is more than willing to help and give good advice.

Also this week, Sandra tells us more about her experience selling one of her photos for a billboard advertisement, which hopefully doesn’t turn into a cautionary tale!

Our question of the week, which you can answer on the PSP group on Flickr, should get some interesting answers: Have you ever been stopped taking photographs? If so for what reason?

Photo Share Podcast #21: Flowers, Prizes and The LOC

We’re baaaaaack! Hard to believe that we’re 21 episodes into this thing . . . did you know that most podcasts are discontinued after just 4 or 5 episodes?

On to the show . . . our photo of the week comes from Basher’s Batey, and we’d like to thank her very much for contributing her work to the group.

Our interview this week, part one of two, is with Helena Zinkham from the Library of Congress. She is one of the team that’s working on the LOC Flickr project. You might have noticed their profile and the photos they’ve uploaded so far. Right now they’re uploading 50 photos a week from the Bain News Service collection, but they’ve already uploaded over 3600 photos. The idea is to make this photos available for people to tag and contribute comments that further contextualize the photos. Stay tuned for the second part next week.

Our question of the week was inspired by some of our interviews. “People often experience life changes which may or may not effect their photography. With or without details, would you like to share how your photography has been effected by these changes?” You can answer the question at the PSP Flickr Group.

While I have you here, I’d like to point you to a new resource on the Web that interacts with Flickr: PhotoShop Express. It’s a Web based tool that allows you to edit and store your photos, plus upload them back to Flickr. Oh, and it’s free.

Speaking of free, we’re having a contest. The purpose of the contest is to promote the podcast — total self interest, I know — but there is some over all benefit: the more popular we become, the better interviews we can get. In that light, I’m giving away 3 domain names that I own. How can you participate in the contest?

You need to promote the podcast on the Web or any other method you can, asking people to come to the Photo Share Podcast and subscribe to the feed. That means you can talk the podcast up on your blog, in your photo stream, on your Flickr profile . . . or any other idea I haven’t thought of. Using our stats package I can tell exactly where our traffic is coming from, so it’ll be pretty easy for me to determine the winner. If you’re doing something interesting you think might not be reflected in our stats, let me know.

To get them you need to either have a Godaddy account or start one (they’re free too). When we announce the winners on the June 16th podcast the first people to contact me will get first choice of the domain name they want. Here are the domains I’ll be giving away:

Photo Share Podcast #20: Our Erotic Side

I know there’s some clever quote from a Prince song about being erotic that I could use here, but I can’t think of it . . . oh, well. Really our interview with Alejandra Guerrero (Corporate Vampire) isn’t about being erotic, but that’s the type of photography she does for work. The interview is about her being put on “restriction” by Flickr even though she was following the community guidelines. In many ways the guidelines are pretty vague, and her restriction seems to be arbitrary because I see pornography all over Flickr (photos that were not taken by the poster –Â which is against the guidelines), and these people don’t have their accounts (most often free ones) shut down. Why?

On another subject . . . we have our photo of the week, submitted by Yyellowbird and voted on by people that visited the Photo Share Podcast website. I’m serious, to me that photo doesn’t look like she has a bunch of props around her; do you think that photo’s staged? Anyhow, thanks for the submission and to all the people that voted for the photo. Check out the site to vote on a new set of photos.

Finally, our new question of the week (back to the erotic!): What are your feelings and thoughts about erotic photography on flickr? How do you think Flickr should make the distinction between erotic photography and pornography? You can answer the new question at the PSP Flickr group.

Sorry we’re a little late, but we’re making fine audio products here! We have a great interview with Barbara, the young photographer that won photo of the week last week. It’s a great interview, especially for us old folks who don’t really know how young people are using Flickr.

This week our photo of the week comes from MilwaukeeJohn, who takes some really cool photos. And please vote for our photos of the week; we really want to get a better turn out in support of the photographers nice enough to submit photos to the PSP group.

Why are we demanding donuts? Because, that was this group is doing, which is sort of poking fun at all of the protest groups that seem to pop up whenever something changes at Flickr, which has recently happened with the introduction of Flickr video.

And the question of the week, which I think is a good one, is ” If you could take a photo of any historical event, what would it be?” You can answer that at the Flickr group.

We’re back! Don’t forget, we’re recording two weeks, then one week off. On the right is our photo of the week, as voted on by you, contributed to the group by M@tty1378. Don’t forget to visit the site and vote for the next photo of the week.

This week we interviewed Debbie T, one of our new group administrators. I’ll tell you, her energy puts me to shame! She’s a good photographer and really knows how to use the power of Flickr networking. In our interview Debbie mentioned that she’s been trying out Ipernity, a photo sharing site much like Flickr. After our interview Sandra checked it out and thought it wasn’t half bad.

We also mentioned a new Flickr feature, find your friends, that looks at your email address book and sees if they have a Flickr account. And we have created our first screencast tutorial, describing how to install and use the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox; we think Greasemonkey is a great tool for improving the Flickr experience.

Finally, don’t forget to answer the question of the week posted on the PSP Flickr group: What is your camera of choice? Have you ever made a camera purchase you were not happy with? Have you ever sold a camera to purchase another?

Our photo of the week comes from Babs, a great young photographer that we interviewed last week (her interview will be on the podcast in three weeks). Take a spin around her photo stream for a real treat.

This week our interview is with Cole and Summer Huggins, administrators of the PSP Flickr Group, avid Flickr users, and old school! You’ll have to listen to the interview to hear what that means. Again with another of our interview subjects, we’ve met people that have taken their Flickr relationships into the real world, meeting Flickr friends in the flesh.

Other news in the world of Flickr . . . some of which we didn’t have a lot of time to discuss . . . you can find photos from the Flickr turns 4 party here.

In the world of Flickr the big news is the public beta of video sharing coming in April. Here are a couple of articles to get you up to speed.

The question of the week, which you can answer on the PSP Flickr group, relates to that Flickr video news: Most digital cameras have a video feature. If you use it, how often, and under what circumstances do you use it?

This week we would like to thank ramperto for his photo of the week that was voted on by visitors to the site; we think this voting on photos can really take off. Take a look on the sidebar of Photo Share Podcast to vote on next week’s POTW.

Speaking of which, we have a suggestion for submissions this week: dangerous photos. That’s right, you can interpret what that means, but we want to see dangerous photos. PLUS, that’s our question of the week: what’s the most dangerous photo you’ve ever taken. So, even if it’s a flower with a bee on it, let us know. You can leave your answer in the discussion section of the PSP Flickr Group.

Do you remember last week when we were talking about Flickrwhacks? What kind of Flickrwhacks can you come up with the word “dangerous”? . . . Maybe I’m not very good at this, but I can’t find anything! I thought “dangerous muffins” was a sure thing but a got a bunch of results back.

Photo Share Podcast #10: We’ve got your Schmaps!

Okay, this week we tried not to bore you to death with business talk about Yahoo and Microsoft. Instead we talked about Schmap and how they have used the Creative Commons License, some hustle, and the kindness of others to create a business model. We’ve mentioned Schmap before, but this past week Sandra created a new group, I Got Schmapped! because when she searched for people who were Schmapped, she found over 5,000 photos. That’s a lot of invites, and none of these people make any money from the fine folks at Schmap. I have a problem with it, but I guess there’s many people who don’t!

Our question of the week, which you can answer on the Photo Share Podcast Flickr group or by calling our comment line, is “What is the price limit you spend on a pro flickr account?” Sandra just re-upped her account for $25 and I predicted that Flickr would increase its price this year.
